The Good Tourist - An ethical traveller's guide - Lucy Popescu
Myanmar
Promotion by travel guides - a mysterous and magical realm with ancient temple cities and pagoda, faded grandeur of colonial architecture, dreamer's paradise, few place that remains unspoilt by mass tourism. Long history, incredible legends and diverse landscapes. Hidden archeological sites, stunning vistas, untouched beaches in the Bay of Bengal, jungles, mountain-hiking, golf courses liad by he British, hot air balloon over the ancient city of Bagan.
Befoe 1885 - known as Myanmar in Burmese
1885 - British raj control, called Burma
1989 - current regime changes it to Myanmar
Internationally both names are recognised. The democracy movement prefers to use Burma
1948 U Nu became Prime Minister for 14 years. Ethnic strife.
1962 General Ne Win - military coup. Held power for next 26 years.
1988, August 8. Mass demonstrations for an elected civilian government. Economic crisis. Bloodshed.
1988, Sep. Coup. General Saw Maung installed in power.
1988. Aung San Suu Kyi, arrived home to nurse her sick mother.Joined newly formed pro-democracy party, the National League for Democracy (NLD).

3. The Burma Campaign UK condemsn British tour firms like Orient Express and Ultimate Travel.
Responsible tourism supports the ordinary people and helps to expose the country to outside influences.
Help the many orphanages struggling to survive. Ask to see the Buddhist monasteries and cottage industries and don't just stay in the centre of a town. Visit the outskirts to get a feel of the real Burma. Use non-state owned domestic airlines (Manadalay and Yangon Airways). Don't endanger locals (you may be watched) when you talk to them.
1996 - "Visit Myanmar Year" - military's tourism drive. Aung San Suu Kyi requested travellers to "postpone" visiting Myanmar.
2007 - saffron revolution led by Burmese monks and pro-democracy activists
protest by a huge increase in the price of oil.
Noble Caledonia - UK-based tourcompany offer luxury river cruises. Some of most dramaic and exciting riverscapes, large and varied range of cultural sites, areas far from the usual tourist track. Restored colonial paddle steamers and sleep in opulent staterooms with air cond and private bathrooms

Inle Lake
Inle Lake, in Myanmar is an extremely beautiful lake, at approximately 1,000m high. It is surrounded by mountains and has a comfortable climate for tourists during the dry season when I visited.
9. Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival, Inle Lake, Myanmar
The Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda Festival was held in October, 2010.
It is the largest festival held around Inle Lake yearly, at the end of the rainy season when the dry season begins. It is held around the time of the full moon. Four Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda's Buddhas are placed on a golden boat which represents the Karaweik - a legendary bird. The boat sails around Inle Lake to visit the 20 villages on the lake and around the lakes.
On the final day, the buddhas are returned back to the Pagoda. A dragon boat race is held on Inle Lake starting from the front of the Pagoda.

Lake Inle Ms Ann
Jan 3, 2010
Dear Hitoshi Kameyama
I am David Sing from Singapore. I am a veterinarian at www.toapayohvets.com
I like your pic of Myanmar in your website
http://photo-exp.axisz.jp/e1104_kameyama/
I admire your picture (left) at
Prologue.
Hitoshi Kameyama Web Site. It looks like a painting of a doorway with people and huts inside the frame.
I have started a licensed travel agency in Singapore, called Design Travel, focused on Myanmar travels. In your website, you mentioned Ms Ann who is a successful Intha business woman and works for the temple raising money to build schools and help orphanages in Inle Lake.
Can you please introduce me to Ms Ann of Inle Lake so that I can meet her and bring Singapore tourists to Inle Lake? I need her travel aent support at Inle Lake end to ensure that Singapore tourists and students have proper and safe tour.
Thank you.

Jan 3, 2010
Dear Olivia Connolly,
In reply to your Facebook message on "I love Inle Lake, Myanmar", I am David Sing, a Singapore licensed tour agency (Design Travel). I can arrange for you customised tours from Myanmar (i.e. using car and driver) from reputable Myanmar agencies. Pl let me know more details of numbers, dates and places, if you wish to plan ahead. The best time is Oct to April (dry season). The country is big and so the best time for Singaporeans may not be the best time for Europeans etc.
